Abstract: Monitoring water quality is a difficult task, and salinity is one of the most relevant factors, with implications for the aquatic community and the water supply for the population. Applying empirical correlations to satellite images to determine salinity is a resource that can be used in estuarine regions. This study applied three empirical correlations, the Cilamaya and Cimandiri algorithms, and the Normalized Difference Salinity Index at points located in the Paraíba do Sul river estuary and in the open sea, with the aim of testing the effectiveness of the methods applied. When analyzing all the points, the Cimandiri algorithm showed a better correlation at points with higher salinity, and Cilamaya showed a better correlation at points located inside the estuary. It can be concluded that the algorithms can be used to determine salinity, but recent studies indicate that the application of machine learning techniques can obtain better results for this purpose.
